There is always Hope
The pandemic has left us all reeling. Business is tough, life is tough, the outlook is bleak. But among all the concern, a beacon of hope shot out from Earth, when The Emirates Mars Mission launched the unmanned ‘Hope’ (Al Amal) orbiter into space.

July 19, 2020 might have been a normal day for most of us, but for the United Arab Emirates Space Agency and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre it was a day like no other.

The spacecraft is designed, developed and operated by the UAE’s very own Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC). The craft has been developed by MBRSC and the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder, with support from Arizona State University (ASU) and the University of California, Berkeley. It was assembled at the University of Colorado.

Scheduled to reach Mars in February 2021, the Hope space probe is designed to study daily and seasonal weather cycles, weather events in the lower atmosphere such as dust storms, and how the weather varies in different regions of the planet. It will also gather data to help us understand why Mars is undergoing drastic climate changes. The mission is being carried out by a team of Emirati engineers in collaboration with foreign research institutions, as a major contribution towards a knowledge-based economy in the UAE.

It is intended to send out a message of optimism to millions of Arabs across the globe and encourage them towards innovation. The mission reminds us all that there is always hope. We can, should and must work together for the greater good of humankind. While our work isn’t as important as the Hope Mission, our humbler mission – to help companies work better – still makes us feel like we are doing our (tiny) bit towards a better world for all.
